Cataract Screening

cataract_screenA Cataract is the term given to a loss of clarity of the lens inside the eye - it is used to describe even the smallest dot to a complete opacification. It is estimated “65% of people aged 50 to 59 have opacities, and all those aged over 80″ (Elkington, Khaw 1988) The visual effects of cataract depend on the individual person, as well as the type, position and size of the cataract. Only when the vision becomes compromised is removal contemplated.

Cataract is a very common cause of visual problems and is usually very easy to detect. Although surgery may eventually be necessary, often we find that management of the condition and the associated visual changes can be very effective in the early stages.

Optometrists at Flint and Partners are experienced in managing cataract and helping you decide if and when surgery is required.

We maintain close links with local ophthalmologists and can initiate both private and NHS referrals for surgery.

Flint & Partners offer NHS Cataract Screening for Wolverhampton and Staffordshire residents.

At your appointment, once your vision and prescription has been assessed, your pupils will be dilated using special eye drops which take approximately twenty minutes to work. You will find your vision is blurred and you may become a little more sensitive to light, so we recommend you bring some sunglasses and DO NOT DRIVE.

Your Optometrist will then thoroughly examine your eyes and determine the type and extent of cataract you have. They will also examine the back of the eyes (the Retina) to assess whether there are any other complications which may be affecting your sight. After this, you will be asked some questions and your practitioner will complete a form and calculate your Cataract Score. If you accumulate enough “points” you will qualify to be referred to a local Ophthalmic hospital for treatment. We will then review you post operatively 6-10 weeks later.
