The Glaucomas are a group of sight threatening ocular conditions which are characterized by damage to the Optic Nerve, resulting in constriction of the visual field (peripheral vision). Glaucoma can be associated with high intra-ocular pressure, although research shows that this is true in only fifty percent of cases.
At the moment, there is not a glaucoma screening scheme in Wolverhampton, and testing usually takes place in the routine eye examination.
Flint and Partners offer more detailed glaucoma screening on a private basis, including digital photography for detailed optic nerve monitoring, full-threshold visual field testing and applanation tonometry. Please ask for datails.
Regular eye examinations are very important for people who are in “at risk” groups as some forms of Glaucoma can be symptom free until severe visual damage has occurred at which point one may notice disturbances such as haloes around lights. At risk groups include:
In the commonest form, Chronic Open Angle Glaucoma, the damage occurs very slowly in contrast to Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma, which is probably the best known as it occurs rapidly and the affected eye becomes red and very painful. This type requires emergency medical intervention.
In broad terms, Glaucoma screening involves assessment of the following:
Once detected, treatment depends upon which type of Glaucoma is present. Many patients are managed with eye drops, although some require laser or surgical intervention.
Most assessments for Glaucoma will be performed within your eye examination although further follow up appointments for Digital Retinal Photography and/or Full Threshold Field Testing will be subject to private charges.
