About Us

A BRIEF HISTORY
Founded by L Gordon Flint in 1935, the practice was originally situated in Wolverhampton city centre, moving to Tettenhall Road in 1965. The other practices were opened in 1970 (Wednesfield) and 1980 (Codsall).
Following the retirement of Christopher Flint in 1998, the partnership of Phil Gilman, Dennis Rumble, Brenda Berg and Peter Rockett welcomed Edward Lyons in 2004; more recently Peter and Ed as the company directors from 2018 have enhanced the practice reputation still further and ensured that the Flint brand is a trusted name in the region.
We are proud to continue to offer a quality of service to patients that has been handed down for over 85 years through several generations of optometrists. You will find us offering the high skills and attention to detail that have developed and matured in that time and that enable us to stand out from many other optical practices.
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
As a group of three ‘house’ practices we are not like other optometrists. Your care has always come first at Flint Optometry. Always mindful of our established reputation for high-quality expert care, our directors Peter Rockett and Ed Lyons are building on the work of their predecessors – most recently Dennis Rumble and Brenda Berg - to create an optometry destination based on thorough care and the needs of patients. Whether you are looking for your first pair of varifocals, contact lenses for partying, optical corrections for sport, have more complex needs like cataract or keratoconus or are concerned about your child’s myopia we are pleased to listen and offer our expertise.
Edward Lyons
Having initially enjoyed being a young patient at the practice, Ed joined for his pre-registration year in 2000 and has been key to the modernisation and specialisation of what we offer. Along with seeing both NHS & private patients for all forms of eye care, including contact lenses, dyslexia and more, Ed has a special interest in Sports Vision. Ed’s innovative approach to assessing the visual profile of an athlete has seen his clients win domestic, national and international titles, and even the odd promotion to the Premie League!
Having assessed clients from 38 countries around the world, he is uniquely experienced in all aspects of vision and sport and has founded his own successful eyewear company Edwards Eyewear producing high quality spectacle frames. Through Ed’s work, we were delighted to win the accolade of Sports Vision Practice of The Year at the Optician Awards. He regularly features in Clay Shooting magazine in addition to writing for Clay Shooting Success & Shootclay.co.uk
Peter Rockett BSc (Hons), MCoptom, Prof Cert Glauc
Educated nearby at Wolverhampton Grammar School, Peter joined the practice in 1989 and has spent many years building on the practice reputation for high quality patient-centered care whilst developing it for the modern age. Currently Chair of Wolverhampton Local Optical Committee with a background of successfully developing and implementing specialist patient services in the City.
He is an experienced optometrist with particular interests in OCT - he has been an Ocular Coherence Tomographer (OCT) (see link) user for 10 years and has led workshops on the subject at the National OCT Conference in London over the past couple of years; contact lenses of all types especially gas permeable lenses and complex contact lens fitting including keratoconus; and emergency eye care (CUES) – Peter led on the creation of this service and enjoys the challenging cases it often provides.
