Enhanced Eye Examinations

We have been using Ocular Coherence Tomography for over 10 years at Flint Optometry so have considerable expertise. This laser-based scanning technique enables a hugely detailed view of the inside of the eye, leading to improved diagnosis and monitoring. We use OCT extensively in screening for glaucoma and macular conditions as well as assessing the overall health of the eye. NHS patients are welcome to access this service for an extra fee.

How Does OCT Work?

Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) is quite different from digital eye photographs we currently offer since this only images the surface of the back of the eye. This scan sees under the retina to parts that cannot be seen by ordinary examination.

This diagnostic technique is very similar to Ultrasound. The OCT uses light rather than sound waves to illustrate the different layers that make up the back of the eye. Our highly trained Optometrists will also be able to capture a digital photograph of the surface of the eye to cross reference areas of concern.

The OCT scan is very quick to perform and is completely painless and non-invasive. Results are available instantaneously and it is a great way for patients to gain a better understanding of their eye condition. This is recommended for everyone over the age of 40, as it is the best way to detect problems at the macula, and to see them before they’ve started to affect someone’s vision.

The detailed images provided by the OCT scan are revolutionizing early detection and treatment of eye conditions such as wet and dry age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachment and diabetic retinopathy. We believe our patients will agree that we should use the best technology to help avoid sight loss.

There will be an additional charge for an OCT scan, but the benefits are clear and patients can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing that their eyes are in great condition.

Why Should You Upgrade Your Eye Test?

Where possible we advise booking our Enhanced Examination which includes OCT. Our years of experience of OCT have shown just how important this test is for allowing the best possible examination and diagnosis. OCT is perfect for deeper assessments of the macula, optic nerve and retina and is highly relevant if you are at risk of conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration.

We offer private and NHS Eye Examinations

We offer private and NHS Eye Examinations, each tailored to the individual patient.

Using a combination of traditional methods and the very latest equipment, we aim to give you the best possible vision for all your requirements and ensure the health of your eyes.

Our optometrists each have only a small number of appointments per day, ensuring that every patient is given plenty of time and that all assessments can be done by the optometrist, not by unqualified staff.
